By the 1870s, however, an escalating conflict between pro- and anti-abstinence forces fermented into what was dubbed the “Westerville Whiskey Wars.” Two times, in 1875 and 1879, local businessman Henry Corbin opened saloons in Westerville, and each time the people of the town used gunpowder to blow up his alcohol-serving establishments.

In 1909, Westerville’s reputation for temperance was so prominent the Anti-Saloon League moved its national headquarters from Washington, D.C. to this Central Ohio city. The League was at the forefront of the Prohibition movement in the U.S., and had its greatest victory when Congress ratified the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Even after Prohibition came to an end, Westerville stayed dry for most of the twentieth century. Then, in 1995, Westerville annexed 941 acres of land to the north, which included several businesses that sold alcohol. Eventually, voters approved the sale of alcohol in “Old Westerville” at several establishments.
