Founded by William A. Smith in 1852, Blacklick is a community located in the southern part of Jefferson Township, inside the Columbus Metropolitan area.

In the early days the community had the name Smithville. It was unincorporated then and remains so today. Nonetheless, because there was another town with that same name Ohio, it was renamed “Black Lick” with two words because of the creek nearby with the same name. That creek comes from the Big Walnut Creek.

For a period of time, historian W. Edson Richmond believed that Black Lick Creek got its name from one of the area’s early landowners, H. G. Black. However, it was later learned Henry George Black had not been born until 1817, and an old map they had found indicated the river had that name going back to at least 1806.

Blacklick was founded as a stop along the railroad line. Later, however, the community became a more popular destination as Columbus grew and it has remained ever since.
